Featured Artist: Elysa Darling

Today we’re excited to feature a wonderful fiber artist, Elysa Darling from 222Handspun. Elysa creates and sells beautiful art batts and art yarns through her Etsy shop, and blogs on her website, 222Handspun. Today we’re sharing photos of Elysa’s batts and handspun yarns, all carded on her Strauch double wide Mad Batt’r. We’ve also asked Elysa a couple of questions about her business.

SFE: How did you get started in the fiber arts?
ED: I’ve been fascinated with yarn and fiber since I was a little kid. My first exposure to fiber arts was at a summer camp where I learned to weave and use natural dyes. My mother taught me how to sew and I used to make clothes for my dolls using yarn and fabric scraps from her stash and much anticipated trips to the local fabric store.

SFE: What’s your favorite part of creating–carding, spinning, knitting?
ED: I actually don’t know how to knit (I know, crazy!). I just learned to crochet last year and I find that easier to do and I’m working on getting better at it. I guess I would say I really love carding and spinning the most though. Dyeing is fun too because I get to play with color in a different way. I have a lot of fun mixing dyes and coming up with some crazy color palettes. But there is something about just grabbing a handful of squishy wool and blending it together to make yarn that really appeals to me. Spinning has a rhythm that is very meditative and relaxing. You don’t have to pay as much attention as you would if you are knitting (or in my case crocheting or weaving). I could spin all day if I had the time.

New From Strauch: The Cotton Seed Flicker

Our customers often come up with great ideas and suggestions. One such lady is a fiber enthusiast who loves to work with organically grown cotton. In the past, she had used a dog slicker brush to tease the fiber away from the seed. It sort of worked, but she kept piercing her fingers with the sharp pins!

Unable to find a small, hand held tool, this avid cotton spinner contacted us. After several conversations we produced a tool that did just what she hoped. It’s similar in size to our popular hand card cleaner and comfortable to use. One part of the design was to reverse the pin direction. She was delighted with the results and now we have another fiber processing tool designed specifically for cotton spinners–the Cotton Seed Flicker!

Cotton Seed Flicker from Strauch Fiber Equipment Co

Available in two pin densities: coarse- 36 TPI (teeth per sq. in.) and fine-72 TPI.  Which one to choose is a matter of personal preference. The 5″ long handle makes the flickers very comfortable to use.

A Weekend with Jazzturtle

A couple of weeks ago we went down to North Carolina to visit Esther Rodgers from Jazzturtle Creations! We had a lovely time visiting and we also filmed some great tutorials, which we’ll be posting on the Strauch Youtube Channel very soon!

Esther creates beautiful art yarns for knitters and art batts for spinners. She buys raw fiber and washes, dyes, cards, and then spins the wool all herself. The result is a thoughtful combination of texture and color that radiates Esther’s bright and infectious personality.

Today we have some behind-the-scenes photos from our filming fun and photos of Esther’s impressive fiber and yarn stash.

We had a great time in North Carolina! We’ll be back again in October for SAFF. Keep an eye out for new video tutorials featuring Esther Rodgers on our Strauch machines coming soon!

UK Part II

We have more photos to share from our trip to the UK! One of the best parts of traveling is meeting new people, and we shared many great times with new friends on this trip!

First, some more photos from WoolFest! Here’s a photo of the vendors. As you can see it was quite busy!

Eta Ingham Lawrie weaving one of her beautiful tapestries.

The work of Jane Cummins, a wood turner and felt maker.

We met a group of Norwegian hikers one day. They like to do Viking husband reenactments, and this lovely piece was made using Alpaca yarn and the afghan stitch. They have many Scottish friends who have ‘permitted’ them to wear the kilts in their colors.

After long days filled with fiber we needed a little beer to help us unwind. This is England’s highest pub at 1,700 feet.

No visit to England is complete without snacking on fish and chips!

Today we’d like to share some of the photos from the first part of our trip to WoolFest and the UK! We also got to visit our exclusive UK vendor, The Threshing Barn! We’ll be posting more about our time at The Threshing Barn in our next post.

But, before we could leave we had to make sure there were lots of carders ready for shipping!

All set up at the UK Woolfest! A wonderful fiber event full of animals, wool, and inspiring fiber artists.

The Mannings

Last weekend we traveled to East Berlin, PA and spent the weekend at The Mannings for their annual Spinning Seminar. There were lots of artists and students, and we had a wonderful time meeting lots of new people, enjoying the beautiful weather, and playing with so much fiber!

Joanne taking a break from demoing at the Mannings. She snuck away to use her motorized carder to continue making roving for her locker hooked rug.

Bobby Irwin was one of the many talented teachers at the Mannings. Here she demonstrates Twined rag rugs and bowls.

Joan Ruane demonstrates hand carding cotton.

Joan then demonstrates spinning the cotton fiber she hand carded.

Thanks so much to the wonderful organizers and attendees! We always love meeting new fiber enthusiasts!

New Ways to Use Strauch Products

It’s no surprise that since we create tools for creative people they also come up with new and unique ways to use our tools! Today we’re sharing two new ways to use Strauch products. Do you have another idea, please share with us, and send us a photo too!

Strauch Teasing Tool works as a mini blending board too

Folks have discovered that our teasing tool works great as a mini blending board. The work surface measures 5-inches wide by 3-1/2-inches deep. A perfectly comfortable size, producing nice, manageable blends. It even comes with a clamp so you can attach it next to your drum carder.

Use a Strauch Table Swift to wind embroidery thread

Do you do needle point or embroidery? Make winding bobbins of thread fast and tangle free by putting the thread over the swift just like you would when winding yarn!

Maryland Sheep & Wool Re-ca

We had a wonderful time at Maryland earlier this month, and we wanted to share some photos from our trip. We had nine dealers vending at the show, so we were quite busy!

Guest Post: Lawre

Today we have a guest post from Lawre, one of our beloved Strauch team. Lawre O’Leary was born and raised in Virginia. Her mother taught her Brownie troop to knit and Lawre has been a fluff-head ever since. She spent 31 years working for the telephone company doing a variety of jobs. Lawre is a pioneer, being one the first female installers and the first female PBX Installer in Virginia. Lawre is a crafty lady, enjoying stained glass, pottery, spinning, and sewing. For 10 years she ran a small company, Lawre’s Laine, sewing totes and needle storage for knitters. She lives in Blacksburg with her husband and crazy little terrier, Callie. When she is not at Strauch Fiber, you might find Lawre in her garden or taking Callie to a Flyball tournament.

Today Lawre shares a blog post about her dog Callie and Flyball. We hope you’ll enjoy this fun sport and adorable dog as much as we do!

Lawre and the world of Watco Danish Oil Finishing

Two years ago we adopted this crazy terrier mix named Callie. She is a little clown who loves her sleep. I have included a picture of her on a bad hair day. In an effort to channel her waking energy we joined a Flyball team. Flyball is the second most popular dog sport in the US. It is a relay race with jumps and balls. Two teams of four dogs run the 60 ft course in about 20 seconds. The height of the jumps is based on the smallest dog on the team, the height dog. Little dogs like Callie are valuable. Our club, New River Rapids, hosted a tournament in Blacksburg recently. Below are some photos of Callie doing her thing at Flyball. Dogs earn points toward titles and teams get ribbons for winning. This weekend, Callie’s team came in first in her division!
